| Bio: | This is my LJ. Here, I primarily talk about the books I'm reading, which largely consist of fantasy (both urban and epic), girlie science fiction, and the occasional horror novel. I also read romance that fits into any or all of those categories and I review the books I've finished here.
What I like when I'm reading:
- Strong heroines who don't do stupid crap so the plot can advance. When the heroine is allowed to kick ass without becoming a Mary Sue in the process, my inner feminist does a happy dance, and we like appeasing my inner feminist.
- Good world-building - I'm primarily a fantasy/SF reader. I can tell when the effort's been made and when it hasn't.
- Genre subversion when it's done well. I don't expect all my heroes to be beefcakes, or my heroines to be virgins. I don't need my good guys to be full of sweetness and light, and villains I can sympathize with make my day.
What I hate:
- Being manipulated - If I'm going to read the next 83 million books in your series, don't string me along by leaving massive plot threads dangling.
- Dumb ass heroines - If a serial killer is on the loose and specifically wants our heroine dead, she should not decide now is a good time for buying sexy lingerie all by herself.
I also hate when heroines are described as feisty, because invariably I want to wring their pretty little necks.
- While I like angst, I'm not a big fan of excessively cartoony angst. If the hero actually thinks to himself, "Oh woe is me! I have not known love in centuries!" or some variation of that, he has to do a lot to make me respect him again, because my natural reaction is, 'Whoa, dude, get over yourself.'
I review for fun, and generally won't finish a book I dislike. But my reviews are honest, and if I've got quibbles, I'll state them.
That being said, I rarely give a book an A+ grade, and it's even rarer that I give out D or F grades. Most books are somewhere in the middle.
If you're an author reading this and would like me to review your book, I'll take requests. I read ebooks for the most part, because I'm totally blind and ebooks are simply easier to store and provide me with instant grattification.
